All of us neurologists know that vertigo is one of the symptoms that most frequently leads patients to seek our help, whether in A&E or during a consultation. It therefore seems to us that this "spatial" division to be a good way of approaching the subject from a neurological perspective, particularly as the different aetiologies of vertigo necessitate clear and precise concepts regarding the differential diagnosis, the timing and type of supplementary investigations to be requested, and the treatment to be prescribed. It should be noted from the outset that we shall refer exclusively to "true" vertigo, that is, vertigo arising from a disorder of the vestibular system considered as a whole, thereby excluding in advance all the numerous symptoms that fall under the term "dizziness".
