Not long ago, a website on otoneurology was launched, spearheaded and inspired by Dr Vaz Garcia; I think it’s an excellent idea, so I’d like to congratulate him wholeheartedly.
Dr Vaz asked us to send him the course we delivered on 4 May 2003 in Estoril, during the 50th Anniversary Congress of the Portuguese Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, to which we were kindly invited – for which we are sincerely grateful.
This is why we are providing a concise summary of what was said at the time regarding what we do and why, in patients suffering from BPPV. This is not, therefore, a theoretical paper in which we set out in detail what BPPV is or what its causes are; rather, we shall confine ourselves to discussing its epidemiology in our setting, how we diagnose it, and, above all, how we treat it and the reasons why we do so. We shall also outline the sequence of manoeuvres we perform, explaining the rationale behind our approach.
