Portuguese Association of Otoneurology

Passing of Dr. Fernando Vaz Garcia

Condolences

Dear Colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Dr Fernando Vaz Garcia, a leading figure in Portuguese medicine and, in particular, in the field of otoneurology.

Throughout his career, Dr Fernando Vaz Garcia played a key role in the development and establishment of otoneurology in Portugal; he was a member of the Vertigo Study Group and contributed actively to the sharing of knowledge and scientific updates in this field.

In 1997, he was a founding member of the Portuguese Association of Otoneurology and served as its first President. His vision and dedication helped to consolidate a scientific community and to promote training and dialogue amongst professionals, always with a focus on the quality of care provided to patients. Ever the innovator, he spearheaded the creation of the first online course in Otoneurology, which has enjoyed recognised success both nationally and internationally.

Renowned for the clarity of his communication and his willingness to teach, he was always a tireless advocate for otoneurology in Portugal, encouraging new generations of clinicians and promoting greater recognition of this field within the medical community and society at large.

His passing is an immense loss to his family, friends and all those who knew him, as well as to the field of Portuguese otoneurology, which has lost one of its leading figures. What remains, however, are the example he set, his scientific and human legacy, and the lasting impact of his work.

To the bereaved family, we offer our deepest condolences and sympathy at this time of grief.

On behalf of the President of the APO,

Pedro Araújo
