Thankfully, we were finally able to meet up in person again. It was brilliant!!
OTONEURO 2021 took place at the Hotel dos Templários in Tomar on 8 and 9 October. It was a great event; we had around 200 participants, 15 oral presentations and 21 posters.
The honorary president of the congress was Prof. Herman Kingma, one of the world’s leading authorities in otoneurology, who contributed greatly, through his personal and teaching qualities, to raising awareness of this subject in Portugal and around the world, and particularly to the training of Portuguese doctors. The well-deserved tribute paid by Dr Rosmaninho Seabra to Prof. Herman Kingma was one of the highlights of this congress.
The opening round-table discussion, on the topic of “Controversies in Ménière’s Disease”, was lively and well-attended. The outstanding presentations by our international guests, Prof. Herman Kingma and Prof. Michael Strupp, also made a fantastic contribution to the quality of the congress.
We must not forget the excellent presentations by Dr Sandra Costa on ”Vestibular rehabilitation”, by Dr Paulo Coelho on “Otoneurological symptoms in multiple sclerosis” and by Prof. Leonel Luís on “Cochlear implant candidacy in the management of Ménière’s disease”, which attracted a great deal of attention from the audience.
It is worth noting that the room was very well attended throughout the conference and that those present participated actively, asking questions and commenting on the presentations.
On Saturday afternoon, the course entitled “Examination, diagnosis and management of patients with vestibular disorders: an efficient, no-nonsense, straightforward approach” was held, led by Prof. Herman Kingma, and once again it captivated the audience.
The success of OTONEURO 2021 demonstrates that knowledge is much more than mere information, and that the exchange of personal experiences is fundamental to a doctor’s training.
