Dear Colleagues,
The year 2018 proved to be a major challenge for APO and for everyone who helped us achieve the objectives we had set ourselves, and we would therefore like to thank everyone for their cooperation, involvement and goodwill.
We can say that the Board’s work in organising all the meetings that took place throughout 2018 was intense but rewarding.
We began 2018 with the Winter Meeting, which took place in February on the Gil Eannes Hospital Ship in Viana do Castelo, on the topic of vestibular migraine.
In April, we held the 2nd Vertigo Day, a masterclass on the subject aimed at junior doctors and young specialists, which took place in Vimeiro and was delivered by
Prof. Herman Kingma, which was first published in October 2017.
Through these meetings, in which the practical component plays a key role and is aimed at younger participants, we have sought to develop and promote training with the aim of addressing certain gaps in knowledge in the field of otoneurology.
Also in April, on the 20th, the APO held the 1st Vertigo Masterclass for General and Family Medicine at Lusíadas Hospital in Lisbon, which included a significant practical component.
The APO Annual Congress took place in May in Peniche, with Prof. Hermínio Pérez Garrigues serving as Honorary President. The national and international speakers, as well as the quality of the oral presentations and posters submitted by the participants, contributed to the high scientific standard of the Congress.
APO’s programme of activities for 2019 has already been finalised, and the most important meeting – the Annual Congress – will take place on 23, 24 and 25 May in Évora at the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation.
This year’s event will take a different format. For the first time, we will be joined by colleagues from General and Family Medicine, for whom a masterclass on vestibular pathology will be held on the first day of the Congress. This will cover the most important topics, from diagnosis to treatment, with a primarily practical focus.
Given the success of the training model introduced with the Masterclasses launched in 2017 and refined in 2018, in 2019 we wish to continue with these meetings, building on what has been achieved so far, thereby fulfilling one of this board’s objectives.
