Portuguese Association of Otoneurology

June 2017

Pedro Araújo

Dear colleagues,

On 19 and 20 May, our association held another annual meeting, which was very well attended by both specialists and ENT and neurology trainees.

The annual meeting is of enormous importance, as it is our association’s flagship event – the place and time of year where leading national specialists can come together to discuss concepts and strategies, fostering a multidisciplinary approach and peer-to-peer learning. The presence of international experts facilitated a more wide-ranging debate, with the presentation of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, whilst also providing an opportunity to forge partnerships and bridge gaps.

Also noteworthy was the huge turnout of residents from different regions of the country, which we are delighted to see, as it demonstrates the growth of otoneurology in Portugal. The presentations, which are of increasingly high quality, reflect the growing interest in the field and the development of otoneurology in Portugal, which the APO has been supporting; this is naturally reflected in the healthcare provided to the patients who seek our help, which is, after all, the APO’s ultimate objective.

It is the intention of this board to increasingly include these projects on the main agenda of future meetings, in order to encourage discussion, provide a clearer picture of how the various units across the country operate, and strive to standardise protocols so that we can raise the standard of care provided.

Although we are still in the process of finalising the meeting’s review, time is running out and this board’s work continues unabated: preparations are already under way for ‘Vertigo Day’ and the Iberian meeting in December, and work has already begun on organising the next annual meeting. We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming events.

We’re counting on you.

Best wishes to you all,
