Portuguese Association of Otoneurology

January 2017

Conceição Monteiro

At the start of a new year, we have to get back to work.

The APO must continue along this path by creating the conditions and incentives necessary for the development of Portuguese otoneurology.

First of all, I would like to tell you that we are preserving the history of the APO, as it is only by taking a critical look at the past that we can shape the future. With this in mind, Dr Vaz Garcia was asked to compile the available documentation, an idea he embraced and accepted from the very outset.

The website, a key means of communication, is also being updated and will now provide information aimed at the general public.

We are in the process of establishing the subspeciality of Otoneurology. And as associations grow and strengthen through the sharing of knowledge and collaborative action, we are organising the 2017 meetings with this in mind.

The first event will be the Winter Meeting, which is to be held on 18 February in Campo Maior. The theme will be positional vertigo, and the conclusions will be published in the meeting’s report and presented at a round-table discussion during the Annual Meeting.

The Annual Meeting will take place on 19 and 20 May in Montargil. A range of topics of interest to trainees and specialists will be discussed during round-table discussions and lectures. As is customary, there will also be a theoretical and practical course, which this year will once again focus on vertigo. We are delighted to welcome speakers from Portugal and abroad who are recognised for their scientific expertise.

We will also be hosting the Iberian Meeting, which is due to take place in the final quarter of the year and which we are responsible for organising this year. We hope to be able to hold a meeting for residents on vertigo later this year, on a date to be announced.

Everyone’s attendance at these meetings is the best incentive for us to continue with these initiatives, which require persistence, effort, determination and cooperation at a time of great difficulty, as we are all aware.

See you soon,
