Portuguese Association of Otoneurology

December 2019

Nuno Trigueiros
President of the APO

The website of the Portuguese Association of Otoneurology (APO) is the Association’s main channel of communication with its members and the general public. With the arrival of the new year, 2020, it is time to look ahead to the activities the APO will be undertaking during the first half of the year.
On 1 February, the 12th Winter Meeting will take place, with the theme “Sudden deafness’. This meeting will be held in Tarouca and will aim to explore the topic in greater depth and prepare the drafting of this year’s Report and the main round-table discussion at the Annual Congress.

On 3 March, the Portuguese Association of Otoneurology intends to mark World Hearing Day by drawing attention to the pivotal role that hearing plays in children’s psychomotor development, in people’s full social and professional integration, and in the process of active ageing. In partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and at its premises, an event will take place at 5.00 pm featuring a panel discussion with various stakeholders from the field of hearing, and will conclude with a musical performance. On the same date, we aim to encourage the various otolaryngology departments to organise awareness-raising activities highlighting the importance of hearing.

On 27 and 28 March, the APO Annual Congress will take place in Tomar, for which we have invited Prof. Herman Kingma to serve as Honorary Chair and Prof. Herminio Pérez Garrigues as an international expert. In addition to the round-table discussion on “Sudden Deafness”, other interesting topics in otoneurology will be addressed. This congress will also feature a course led by Prof. Herman Kingma.

As you may have noticed, the date of the Annual Congress has been brought forward to March. The reason for this was to avoid a clash with the SPORL-CCP Congress whilst also avoiding the peak hotel season, which begins in June. We realised that it made little sense to hold the two main congresses involving ENT specialists in May, as this created an unnecessary scheduling conflict. Therefore, for the next three-year period, the Annual Congress will be held in March.

Kind regards.
